Success for All

At Rolleston State School we offer a range of intervention strategies to assist our students who are experiencing difficulty in the development of their literacy and numeracy skills at all stages of their schooling.

We regularly monitor students’ progress and modify our teaching strategies in ways that best support our students. Our intervention programs may provide one-on-one support, withdrawal with a specialist teacher or small group instruction within a classroom setting. These programs may be delivered by specialist teachers, tutors, trained teacher-aides, parents or volunteers.

The needs of students experiencing learning difficulties are identified through the Appraisement Process. Our Learning Support teacher assists our teachers to build support into the class environment and into units of work so that we best cater for a range of abilities and learning needs.

In order to ensure all learners reach their potential in literacy and numeracy, we have programs that provide targeted support for students at key milestones during their primary years.

All students are monitored throughout Years 1 to 3 using a Developmental Continuum and those students not making sufficient progress by the middle of Year 2 receive additional classroom support.

We also provide additional support for upper primary students who do not meet national literacy benchmarks in the Year 5 test. Additional teacher aide time provides intervention to targeted Year 6 and 7 students in a variety of ways including small groups and one-to-one.

The “Even Start Tutoring Program” provides direct assistance to students who have not achieved minimum standards in reading, writing, and mathematics in Years 3, 5 and 7.

We have access to specialised services for students with disabilities to ensure we provide a valued and appropriate education program for students who have needs arising from autistic spectrum disorder, hearing impairment, intellectual impairment, physical impairment, vision impairment or a combination of these.

Our specialists include:

· Special Support and Advisory Visiting Teachers

· Guidance Officers

· Occupational Therapists

· Physiotherapists

· Speech-Language Pathologists

· Registered Nurses.

Where required, these professionals will visit students at Rolleston State School to assess their educational needs and assist us in developing appropriately modified programs.

Our Guidance Officer assists us by assessing children experiencing learning or emotional problems. Parental consent is obtained and an interview with parents is generally part of the psychological assessment. Advice is then provided to parents and staff.
